How to Smoke Concentrates in a Regular Glass Bong
Truth be told, a glass bong you can smoke dabs or hash oil out of is at its core just like any other bong out there. There’s nothing inherently different about the way is smoke is pulled through it or filtered through water, and they generally keep a pretty similar shape though they might tend to be a bit smaller sometimes. The only important difference between a bong you smoke bud out of and one you can use as a dab rig is the presence of a ‘nail’. Not a construction nail, a heating nail. Instead of a typical bowl to pack some dry herb in, a dabbing rig uses a heating element usually made from titanium, quartz, or ceramic to smoke your chosen concentrate.
You use a hand torch to heat the element, usually to the point that it’s red hot, and it’s good practice to let the nail cool back down until it’s back to its natural color. This is because when you heat your dabs too much it’ll burn away terpenes which interact with the THC in it, and it’ll also burn the wonderful flavor to oblivion. After thirty seconds, give or take, have passed after heating up your nail, the concentrate is placed on the nail with a ‘dabbing tool’ (any pointed metal object will do honestly) and you will see it instantly sizzle and bubble up. That’s your cue to start inhaling, and then when you’ve got a satisfactory volume of smoke, you cap it with a small dome-like tool to close off the airway and suck up every last bit of it.
Sounds complicated right? Tons of people think you have to get all of these tools and things to be able to enjoy the fabled potency of concentrates, but that turns out to be a false assumption in reality. All you have to do is keep the flame from directly touching the concentrate or it will burn up right into the air. The solution? Here’s a trick. If you’ve got concentrate but no dab rig, simply sandwich some of your concentrate between two substantial layers of weed in your glass bong’s bowl. Rip it as usual, but hold the flame slightly higher away from the bowl than you normally do, and inhale very slowly to let the flame gently heat the contents of the bowl. This will allow the concentrate to combust at a reasonable temperature, and the smoke will mix nicely with your bud. Enjoy!
